Clover School District launches The Innovation Bus, a creative and exciting way to support learning10/31/2023 BY DIANA BRAKEFIELD, CHS SOPHOMORE Clover, SC - All schools want to foster social and synergetic skills among elementary-aged students, but Clover School District (CSD) has come up with a creative and exciting way to support learning these skills. The Innovation Bus was launched in August when it began making rounds to all elementary schools in the district. This innovative mobile classroom is designed to sharpen students’ minds by focusing on science, math, and technology, ultimately preparing them for the challenges of the workforce. “I think that anything that we can do to increase critical thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, and things like that that engage our students is a bonus,” remarks Nick LaFave, CSD’s Personalized Learning Specialist, underlining the critical importance of such a program in today’s schools. The unique approach taken by the Innovation Bus is similar to an escape room, transforming learning into an engaging and enjoyable adventure. Nick LaFave, who has experienced the impact firsthand, highlights, “One of the best things about the bus is the level of engagement it brings for students.” This intriguing concept was born from the minds of the Innovation Coaches within the Clover School District, and it has been a resounding success, thanks to the collaboration of several essential departments. Notably, the transportation department and the technology department added their expertise to this venture. The heart of the Innovation Bus, however, lies with the students themselves. Clover’s own CTE Engineering students, under the mentorship of Mr. Wayne Williams, the 2022-2023 CSD Teacher of the Year, were the masterminds behind the construction of this mobile educational hub. Mr. Williams recalls how the school district approached him with this remarkable vision and tasked his class with making it a reality. “Anytime we can work on stuff that’s going to benefit students in the Clover School District or the community, I’ll always take it on,” states Mr. Williams, emphasizing his dedication to the improvement of education for all students. The Engineering class collaborated with the Building Construction class and the CSD Maintenance Department to breathe life into the Innovation Bus. Their combined efforts have allowed elementary students across the district to engage with this remarkable project. Caitlin Diaz, a student at Griggs Road Elementary, offered her perspective on the experience, saying, “You have to cooperate with your team and don’t rush.” Her words demonstrate the lessons being imparted by the Innovation Bus, where teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are honed in an engaging and fun-filled atmosphere.
